Paradisus Resorts Pursues Sustainability

Posted on by Paradisus Resorts

Paradisus Resorts, the all-inclusive luxury brand of Meliá Hotels International, concerned with maintaining the balance of the surrounding ecosystem, has opted to become sustainable and implement new policies to promote eco-friendly tourism. Consequently, the prestigious hotel chain is working to achieve four important objectives: reducing their carbon footprint, decreasing water consumption, minimising environmental impact and reducing waste. These objectives seek to obtain the strictest environmental certifications, including the worldwide recognized EarthCheck Certification.
The four main sustainability objectives of Paradisus Resorts are based on the following actions:
1. Lessening climate change by saving energy and using it efficiently, as well as reducing the emission of air pollutants into the atmosphere
2. Decreasing the use of water resources and controlling discharges and their possible contamination of the soil
3. Minimising the environmental impact of consuming raw materials
4. Reducing the contamination of waste, as well as protecting and preserving ecosystems, especially those with a high ecological value
Paradisus Playa del Carmen, La Perla and La Esmeralda
Paradisus Playa del Carmen, located on the shores of the majestic Riviera Maya, has worked tirelessly to meet the established sustainability objectives. Since 2013, the hotel has collaborated with The Initiative for Low-Carbon Tourism in Quintana Roo, promoted by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Both luxury resorts, Paradisus La Perla (adults only) and La Esmeralda (families), are in the Quintana Roo mangrove, an area of high environmental value. This ecosystem is considered a feeding, shelter and growth area for crustaceans and fish; it serves as a natural flood control system; it acts as a natural barrier against hurricanes; and it prevents erosion in the area, protects coasts and improves water quality. That is why Paradisus Playa del Carmen is collaborating with the SEMARNAT (Mexican Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources) to preserve six protected species in danger of extinction, including the red mangrove.
Paradisus Cancun
Nestled between the majestic Caribbean Sea and the Nichupté Lagoon System, Paradisus Cancun is committed to caring for the surrounding ecosystem formed by several mangrove varieties. The luxury resort is working together with collaborators to perform actions that contribute to taking care of the environment. The first, implemented in December 2013, was to replace the use of boilers with a high-tech system that does not emit gas pollutants into the atmosphere and an osmosis plant was installed to take advantage of groundwater. The hotel also participates in the Municipal Ecology Turtle Protection Program. In addition, comprehensive waste management efforts have been implemented as a result of the Municipal Solid and Special Waste Management Plan. Paradisus Cancun is constantly striving to create a culture of sustainability, training its staff accordingly and solidifying its position as a sustainable company by obtaining EarthCheck’s International Certification.
Paradisus Palma Real and Paradisus Punta Cana
Located on the Bávaro beaches, Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, Paradisus Punta Cana and Paradisus Palma Real were carefully designed in a natural environment surrounded by mangroves and local flora and fauna. Paradisus Punta Cana even has a museum of indigenous statues in its gardens highlighting the aboriginal heritage of the Dominican Republic.
Paradisus Punta Cana and Paradisus Palma Real are committed to attaining the best environmental practices; for that reason both properties have been granted the EarthCheck Silver Certification, and are currently being assessed to obtain the Gold Certification. Both hotels have also joined the International Blue Flag Beach and Marina Certification, backed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). By implementing sustainable initiatives to improve their operations, the hotels try to minimise their impact on the environment and reduce their use of energy and natural resources and the production of waste. They are also involved in the local community’s efforts to improve the environment through various social initiatives.
Paradisus Resorts constantly encourages all their stakeholders —guests, collaborators, suppliers and contractors— to share their commitment to environmental and social sustainability.
